Why Platform Websites Are Slow, and Why Google Cares
Here's an experiment you can run in the next thirty seconds. Open your website on your phone, on cellular data, and count how long it takes before you can actually read it.
If you counted past three, you have a problem you can't see from your office wifi. Google's research found that more than half of mobile visitors abandon a page that takes longer than three seconds to load. They don't complain. They don't come back later. They just leave, and they leave for a competitor.
Why platform sites are heavy
When you build on Wix, Squarespace, or GoDaddy's builder, your visitors don't just download your website. They download the machinery of the platform itself.
Every platform site ships with the code for the entire drag-and-drop editing system, support for every feature the platform offers whether you use it or not, and generic templates built to handle every possible business rather than yours specifically. Add a few apps from the platform's app store, a chat widget here, a popup there, and each one stacks more weight on top.
None of this is visible to you. All of it is downloaded by every visitor, on every visit, before your menu or your phone number appears.
A custom-built site works the other way around. It contains your pages, your images, and nothing else. There is no editor riding along, no unused features, no platform. That's the entire reason custom sites are fast: not magic, just absence of baggage.
Why Google cares, and ranks you accordingly
Google measures how real visitors experience your site through a set of metrics called Core Web Vitals: how fast the main content appears, how quickly the page responds to taps, and whether things jump around while loading. These measurements are a ranking factor. Between two businesses with similar content, the faster site tends to appear higher in search results.
This is why speed isn't a technical vanity metric. It compounds. A slow site ranks lower, so fewer people find you. The ones who do find you leave more often before the page loads. Both losses are silent, which is what makes them dangerous: there's no error message for customers who never arrived.
To be fair to the platforms
A carefully built platform site, with compressed images and no app clutter, can perform acceptably. The platforms have improved. But you're always starting the race carrying the platform on your back, and the discipline required to stay light is exactly the kind of thing that erodes as a business adds "just one more" widget over the years.
How to check where you stand
Go to PageSpeed Insights (pagespeed.web.dev), enter your website address, and look at the mobile score. It's free, it's Google's own tool, and it measures what Google measures. Under 50 means your site is actively costing you customers. If you're not sure how to read the results, send us your score and we'll tell you honestly whether it's worth fixing, and how.
Every site Lume Studio builds is custom code with nothing riding along, which is why speed isn't an upgrade we sell. It's just what a website is supposed to be.
